“From whence we come and how and whither,” are the lyrics of an old, beloved Unitarian Universalist hymn. You may have sung it at an ordination or installation. The Transition Team, joined by Rev. Lisa and members of UUCC, will consider UUCC’s historical timeline and how our heritage calls us to move into our future together.

What is prayer? It’s one of those words that means different things to different people. It can feel intimidating or comfortable, confusing or meaningful. Rev. Lisa will explore different types of prayer – with examples you can try!

UU Columbia has a history of bold actions to build, strengthen and nurture beloved community.  On this Martin Luther King Sunday, we will look at our congregation’s history of courageous actions that have enabled us to be a beacon of light fostering compassion, interdependence and acts of justice. What’s needed now to ‘do what’s right’? Rev. Lisa will be joined in the pulpit by Rev. Lydia Ferrante-Roseberry, Stewardship for Us consultant.

As we begin a new calendar year, we consider the writings of Howard Thurman on three different kinds of love. He was an American author, philosopher, theologian, educator, mystic and leader in the civil rights movement, in which he served as caretaker and spiritual advisor to other movement leaders.

In the United States, fall and winter holidays are often centered around traditions of food and family. Each year, media is saturated with headlines like, “A New Twist on Holiday Recipes!” How might we infuse the holiday season with new insights about gratitude and our traditions?

The cultural understanding of hope is often rooted in emotion, “I feel hopeful about…” But what if hope is actually a framework for how to survive in difficult times? Hope can give a sense of purpose and autonomy. It is also a way for us to find agency, practice gratitude, and inspire generosity. Executive Director Laurice Grae (she/they) will lead this worship service.
